Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a monochrome portrait with a coloured background made of overlapping printed sheets. A middle-aged man fills much of the centre and right side, shown from around the waist upwards. He has short, dark hair combed back, a pale face turned slightly towards the viewer’s left, and a restrained smile. He wears a dark jacket over a bright white waistcoat and shirt, with a white bow tie. His hands meet near the lower-right edge, where one appears to hold a small, pale object. The portrait is cut off by the bottom and right edges of the cover.
Behind him, papers or printed pages lie at different angles and overlap one another. They are pale grey, yellow, dusty pink, blue and lavender, with dark lettering and blocks of print; most of this background text is partly obscured, too small or angled to read confidently. The layers form a shallow, graphic-looking ground rather than a clearly defined room or landscape. The man’s sharply contrasting black-and-white clothing stands out against it. The portrait has a photographic appearance and muted, slightly cool tones, while the background retains more visible colour.
White lettering is arranged over the darker area at the left. Near the upper-left of the portrait, a small, widely spaced line reads “GOREUON”. Beneath it, the name “RICHIE THOMAS” is set in large, high-contrast serif capitals on two lines. “TENOR” appears below in smaller, widely spaced capitals. Near the bottom-left, two small lines of white text read “42 O GANEUON” and “AR DDWY CD”; below them, a bolder line reads “42 TRACKS ON 2 CDS”. The typography is left-aligned, with the large name as the most prominent text. The overall image has no visible border.
What the image evokes.
The cover sets a composed, formal portrait against a restless scatter of printed pages. That contrast gives it two different kinds of order: the man’s upright figure and neat evening clothes suggest ceremony and self-possession, while the angled sheets make the background feel busy and provisional, as if a pile of documents has been spread across a desk. Their varied colours soften the severity of the black jacket and white shirt without making the image feel bright.
The large serif lettering lends the left side a stately, almost theatrical air. Its overlap with the portrait makes the design feel assembled from distinct layers, like a carefully arranged programme or printed announcement. The result is poised but not entirely still: the figure seems settled, while the pages behind him draw the eye in several directions. There is a mild tension between public formality and the intimate, slightly informal expression visible in his face.
