Inside the image.
A square cover shows a tightly grouped cluster of three human figures, painted in rough strokes of deep red, rust and burnt orange against a nearly black background. The figures fill most of the frame and overlap: a large figure at the left is cropped by the edge, a smaller head and upper body sit near the centre, and a broad-shouldered figure occupies the right. Their faces are turned at slightly different angles, with dark, indistinct features and shadowed eyes. The bodies and clothing merge into the same red-black palette, so their outlines are uneven and partly lost in the surrounding darkness.
The left figure leans inward, its head near the upper-left corner and its torso descending to the lower edge. The central figure is set slightly behind the others, with its head around the upper middle and its body largely obscured. At right, the tallest head sits close to the top edge; the figure's shoulder and arm extend down and out of frame. Dark strokes between the figures suggest folds, limbs or clothing, though their precise forms are difficult to distinguish. A small curved white shape, like a narrow crescent, appears above the central figure, near the top edge. The background is otherwise an unbroken, very dark field. There is no visible border.
The palette is dominated by glowing, uneven reds and orange-red highlights against black and deep blue-black shadows. The brightest areas lie across the faces and upper bodies, while dark marks cut through them and obscure details. The light seems to come from within the painted scene rather than from a clearly depicted source; there are no sharply defined cast shadows. The image has a distressed, painterly surface, with visible brush marks and rough transitions between colour areas. The figures are illustrative rather than photographic, and their forms are deliberately imprecise.
White lettering is placed across the lower-right portion of the image, over the figures. The larger line reads “iwcs a doyle” in loose, hand-drawn lowercase script, slanting slightly and extending towards the right edge. Beneath it, a smaller line reads “edrychiad cyntaf”; the final letters are close to the edge. The irregular handwritten strokes stand out clearly against the dark red and black beneath them.
What the image evokes.
The close grouping makes the figures feel pressed into a shared space, as if the darkness has drawn them together. Their faces are near enough to invite comparison, yet each turns away or sinks into shadow, leaving the group difficult to read as a single scene. It can suggest a crowd glimpsed at night, or a memory in which people remain vivid as patches of heat while their expressions and identities slip away.
The reds have an almost ember-like intensity, but the surrounding black keeps that warmth uneasy. The small white crescent above the heads offers a brief, cool counterpoint; it might read as a fragment of moonlight, a mark on the dark field, or simply another isolated shape. The rough, shifting paint gives the scene a raw and immediate quality, while the handwritten lettering feels intimate and unpolished. Together they create a tension between a human closeness and an atmosphere that is obscure, watchful and unsettled.
