Gwerinos
Album artwork for Gwerinos, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover with a pale peach and cream background, textured throughout by fine horizontal lines and mottled, woven-looking marks. Faint broad grey-beige shapes cross behind the text, including a soft diagonal sweep and some branching or angular lines. They remain low in contrast and indistinct.
The largest element is the black word “GWERNOS”, set diagonally across the upper half, rising from the lower left towards the upper right. Its heavy, irregular serif letters have a worn, uneven appearance; the first letter sits close to the left edge, while the final letters approach the top edge. Across the lower portion, a torn strip of white paper lies at a slight upward angle. Its ragged edges and creases stand out against the background. The black typewriter-style lettering on it reads “di-dial-lan...” and is spaced across most of the strip. The image is tightly framed, with no visible border or additional scene. Its restrained palette of peach, cream, grey and black is interrupted chiefly by the bold lettering.
What the image evokes.
The cover feels as though a few pieces of printed matter have been laid over a faded textile: the large, emphatic lettering sits against a soft, finely grained field, while the torn label at the bottom brings a more intimate, handmade touch. The contrast between the word’s heavy, upward sweep and the smaller line of text gives the composition a push and pull between proclamation and fragment.
The pale, worn colours suggest an old paper label or cloth kept in the light, though the surface remains ambiguous: it could evoke fabric, a rubbed print, or a faintly patterned wall. The torn strip gives the lower text the quality of a snippet cut from a note, while its trailing dots leave it suspended rather than resolved. The result is spare but not blank, balancing roughness and order, faded softness and stark black lettering.
