Cantus Triquetrus (Karl Jenkins)
Seiriol Choir
Album artwork for Seiriol Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover pairs large, sharply edged geometric forms with a deep red background. A stack of overlapping, white-outlined triangles and quadrilaterals rises from the lower-left edge and runs up the left side, partly cropped by the top and bottom borders. The shapes vary in size and angle, with interiors in dark red, navy, bright blue, turquoise, pale aqua, green and yellow. Their arrangement suggests a tall, irregular tower or cascading set of angular frames; some outlines cross over one another, creating a layered, cut-out appearance. Near the bottom, a broad yellow triangle is only partly visible.
The background is filled with burgundy, crimson and magenta tones. Faint angular bands and translucent-looking shapes form a loose, abstract pattern, most noticeable behind the lettering and towards the right. The left-hand geometry is crisp and bright against this darker field, while the right side is more open, though crossed by subtle patterning.
Three groups of lettering occupy the right half. Near the upper right, large white text reads “Cór Seiriol” in tall, narrow, irregularly shaped letters, with a dark edge or shadow that helps separate it from the red. Directly below, smaller blue lettering reads “gyda Cherddorfa BBC Now Orchestra”. In the lower-right area, “Cantus” and “Triquetrus” appear on two lines in bold yellow-green letters, with “KARL JENKINS” beneath in smaller white capitals. The cover is a graphic illustration rather than a photograph, combining flat colour, strong outlines and softly layered background shapes.
What the image evokes.
The outlined forms have the quality of a construction assembled from fragments: nested frames, a stack of stained-glass shards, or a totem of brightly coloured planes. Their tilting edges bring a sense of movement to the left side, as if the structure is leaning or unfolding while remaining held together by its pale borders. The red field answers this with a more diffuse energy, its shadowy facets suggesting depth without settling into a recognisable place.
There is a lively contrast between the orderly geometry and the lettering’s more expressive, slightly uneven shapes. The composition feels both formal and playful: the stacked forms provide a measured framework, while the vivid turquoise, green and yellow accents interrupt the surrounding reds with flashes of coolness and light. The result may recall an abstract stage backdrop or a boldly coloured piece of cut-paper design, though it retains the feeling of a compact, self-contained emblem. The open space around the words gives them room to ring out across the more intricate edge of shapes.
