Seiriol Choir
Album artwork for Seiriol Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square, aged-looking cream panel is framed by a broad dark green edge and an elaborate border of interlaced bands. The border runs across the top and bottom and down the left side, leaving the right edge open. Its deep blue and purple strands loop over and under one another, picked out with fine gold and pale blue lines. Small red dots punctuate the border and the surrounding cream field; the corners of the bands end in pointed, leaf-like tips.
The main design occupies the centre and right half. A large ornate letter “S” is formed from curling, interwoven shapes in blue, green, red, cream and gold. Its upper curve is compact and densely decorated with small spirals and knot-like forms, while the lower curve expands into a rounder, open coil. A thin, curling extension reaches to the right and ends in a small spiral. The letter is accompanied by dark lettering: “ŌR.” appears at upper right, and “EIRIOL” sits below it in larger capitals. A gold-coloured numeral “2” is placed beneath the lettering. The ornament and words sit on the lightly mottled cream ground, with no depicted setting or depth; the effect is that of a flat, carefully arranged illustration.
The palette is restrained but varied: navy and indigo dominate the border, while the central lettering combines muted turquoise, olive green, rust red, cream, and metallic-looking gold. Fine dark outlines separate the intertwined forms. The surface appears lightly speckled and worn, especially across the pale background, giving the otherwise crisp decorative lines an aged, printed-page appearance. The lettering mixes heavy, rounded serif capitals with the looping calligraphic shape of the enlarged initial.
What the image evokes.
The image suggests an illuminated manuscript page or a decorated title leaf: the interlaced frame and lavish initial make the cover feel like an object preserved from a small, private library. Its square format and measured margins give it the stillness of a page meant to be studied, while the border’s repeated knots set up a steady rhythm around the more adventurous central letter.
There is a pleasing tension between enclosure and movement. The border seems to hold the composition in place, yet its bands keep threading through one another; the central “S” appears to loosen into curls and tendrils that almost spill into the open space on the right. The tiny red dots read like pinpricks of colour or marks on a map, warming the cool blues and greens without disrupting their order. The cream ground and softened colours lend the design a gentle, antique air, though the close, precise ornament also feels lively and intricate. It can be read as both a formal emblem and a miniature garden of spirals, with no single interpretation fully settling the balance between the two.
