Celtic Brass
Nfd Brass Band
Album artwork for Nfd Brass Band, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover with a pale yellow-green background. Text fills the left side, while a tall, rectangular colour photograph occupies much of the right. The photograph has a thin dark border and shows a stone building rising above trees: two round, turret-like towers with steep conical roofs stand against a clear blue sky. The taller tower is near the upper centre of the photograph; a smaller one sits to its left. Their pale stone walls have small dark window openings. Autumn-coloured foliage, including brown, ochre and green leaves, partly obscures the lower walls. A few bare branches are visible near the right edge. The image is cropped below the trees and at the sides, with no visible ground or people.
At upper left, two lines of bold dark-green text read “National Fuel Distributors Band” and “(‘Parc and Dare’)”. Beneath them, the title appears in large red uppercase letters across two lines: “CELTIC” and “BRASS”. A smaller black italic line below reads “Conductor: Paul Cosh”. Lower on the left, another bold dark-green line reads “Band Pres NFD”; below it, large red uppercase lettering on two lines reads “CASTELL” and “COCH”. A final smaller black italic line reads “Arweinydda: Paul Cosh”. The text is left-aligned, with a narrow gap between the text block and the photograph. The lettering is set directly on the pale background, without boxes or ornament. The overall design pairs this dense, stacked type with the bordered architectural photograph. The image appears photographic, while the typography and plain background are graphic elements. The cover is evenly lit, with strong contrast between the pale field, red lettering, dark-green headings and blue sky.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the directness of a printed notice or programme: the information is arranged in compact blocks, and the red title carries the strongest visual weight. Beside it, the photograph offers a different sort of attention, drawing the eye upwards along the towers to their pointed roofs. The pairing gives the image a mild contrast between practical labelling and the almost storybook silhouette of the building.
The turrets and autumn foliage may call to mind a castle in a tale, though the photograph remains matter-of-fact and the cover does not turn it into a fantasy scene. Blue sky and warm leaves lend the architecture a calm, seasonal quality; the pale, slightly greenish ground around the picture makes the whole design feel like an old-fashioned sleeve or local event handbill. Its restrained layout leaves the photograph to supply the sense of place, while the oversized red words make the cover feel emphatic and ceremonial.
