Dos I Ganu
Dafydd Iwan
Album artwork for Dafydd Iwan, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square photographic cover shows an older man leaning against a pale grey metal railing, seen from below against a clear, deep blue sky. He occupies the left and lower-middle of the image. His head is near the upper-left quadrant, turned slightly upwards and towards the left, while his forearms rest across the top rail. He wears a dark blue short-sleeved shirt; a silver wristwatch is visible on the arm crossing the railing. His expression appears relaxed and thoughtful, with sunlight catching his face and grey hair.
The railing cuts diagonally upwards from the lower left towards the upper right. Its broad top bar and several vertical supports fill much of the lower half, with a second rail and a few darker fittings visible behind and below. The man is framed by the bars: one forearm lies over the upper rail, while his torso and arms are partly obscured by the structure. A small patch of pale cloud or haze appears behind him near the top of the railing. The sky provides open space around his head and across the right side. The image has no visible border.
Large, irregular white lettering reading “DOS I GANU” spans the top of the cover, with tall, loosely hand-drawn capitals that vary in shape and spacing. Beneath it, over the sky just to the right of the man's head, the smaller name “DAFYDD IWAN” appears in similarly rough white capitals. The lettering sits above the figure without obscuring his face. Bright white type and the sunlit railing contrast with the saturated blue sky and the darker blue of his clothing. The image is a colour photograph, with natural daylight, crisp edges and a slightly low viewpoint that makes the railing dominate the foreground.
What the image evokes.
The low viewpoint lends the scene a quietly expansive feeling: the man seems to lean into a stretch of sky, while the railing gives the image a firm, everyday anchor. His upward gaze could suggest contemplation or simply enjoyment of the sun; the photograph leaves that feeling open. The metal bars create a boundary, but the broad blue field beyond them keeps the composition from feeling enclosed.
The loose lettering has a hand-painted, almost signboard-like character. Its uneven strokes sit comfortably against the straightforward photograph, giving the cover a personal, informal warmth. There is a pleasing tension between the solid geometry of the rail and the title's wavering contours, and between the man's still pose and the diagonal line that sweeps across the frame. The overall impression is unforced and outdoorsy, like a candid pause captured in bright weather.
