A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

The square cover combines a pale, softly faded background with a sharper photographic strip occupying the right side. The largest lettering runs across the top: “caneuon” appears in small white lowercase letters above “CAFFI SALI MALI”, whose rounded, heavy capitals are picked out in blue, yellow and lime green. The title partly overlaps the photographs and the pastel ground. Beneath it, “cyfrol 2” appears in white over the upper photograph.

The background is built from large, translucent-looking squares in lavender, powder blue, pink and muted mauve, like an uneven windowpane grid. A faint, washed-out face is just visible behind the pattern on the left and centre; its eyes and nose can be made out, though much of it blends into the pale blocks. In the lower-left corner, a small white “S4C” mark sits above two lines of tiny yellow writing that are too small to read confidently.

Two rectangular photographs are stacked along the right edge, separated by a narrow horizontal boundary. In the upper one, a woman in a mustard-yellow top and a short pale necklace turns her face upwards towards the left with a broad smile. Dark hair frames her face. A leafy indoor plant fills much of the area beside and behind her, against a warm, dim background. In the lower photograph, a woman faces forward behind a counter. She wears a bright red top with a white collar and a dark, rounded hat; her hands are held together near her waist. Behind her are a yellow-orange wall with circular decorations and a sign bearing a small version of the “CAFFI” lettering. The photographic panels have stronger contrast and warmer colours than the hazy, cool-toned background.

The design mixes photography, a geometric pastel pattern and prominent display lettering. The title’s thick, rounded forms and contrasting colours give the upper edge a lively, sign-like quality, while the faded face and translucent squares create a much softer field beneath it. The composition is asymmetrical: the two crisp portraits draw attention to the right, balanced by the larger expanse of pale patterned space on the left.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover has the feel of a little television window set into a hazy, colour-washed wall. The two photographs are vivid and immediate, while the face behind the squares seems to hover at a distance, as though recalled from another scene or seen through frosted glass. That contrast gives the design a curious double register: cheerful, bustling portraits in the foreground and a quieter, almost dreamlike trace beneath them.

The chunky, multicoloured title suggests hand-painted shop lettering or the playful signage of a café, especially alongside the counter and the plant-filled interior. The pastel grid, meanwhile, can suggest a tiled window or panes of coloured glass. The result feels both domestic and slightly theatrical: one portrait catches a spontaneous, upward glance; the other presents a more posed, front-facing figure against a patterned set. Their different moods leave the cover lively without settling into a single scene.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
