Welsh Incident
Gareth Glyn
Album artwork for Gareth Glyn, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square photographic album cover shows a low-tide shore beneath a hazy coastal skyline. Wet sand and shallow water fill the foreground and middle distance, reflecting a pale blue and white sky. Scattered across the exposed shore are dark stones and rocks of varied sizes: a large rounded, rough-surfaced boulder sits left of centre near the bottom, with smaller stones clustered around it and a loose line of rocks extending towards the horizon. Thin bands of water and sand lead the eye back to a distant headland, where a small, dark castle-like silhouette crowns a low rise. A faint strip of buildings follows the coast to its right. At the far right of the horizon, a tiny upright dark shape is visible but too small to identify.
The sky occupies the upper quarter, grading from blue at the top to a bright, nearly white band above the horizon. The distant land is softened by mist, while the foreground is sharper and richer in colour: the water is silvery blue and brown, and the wet sand at lower right glows ochre and copper. Reflections and shallow ripples make the water's surface gently irregular. There is no separate frame or border.
Large white lettering overlays the centre of the photograph. “Welsh” appears across the upper middle in an elegant, slanted serif script, with “Incident” directly beneath it in much larger, similarly flowing letters; both words overlap the reflective water and rocks. Below, smaller white capitals read “GYDA WITH JONATHAN PRYCE”. A further two-line inscription beneath reads “A GWEITHIAU CERDDORFAOL ERAILL” and “AND OTHER ORCHESTRAL WORKS”. Near the bottom, “Gareth Glyn” is written in large white italic lettering, spanning the lower centre over the sand and water. At lower left, small stacked capitals read “CD DDWBL” and “DOUBLE CD”. A small rectangular black-and-white portrait is placed at lower right, beside the title and above the bottom lettering; it shows a man's head and shoulders against a light background. A narrow white logo block beside the portrait reads “radio cymru” in small dark letters, with a simple circular mark above. The cover combines a naturalistic landscape photograph with prominent, high-contrast type and small printed inserts.
What the image evokes.
The low tide gives the scene a sense of temporary exposure: stones that would usually lie beneath the sea are left visible in the open, while the shallow water holds a second, wavering version of the sky. That reflective strip between land and horizon makes the image feel suspended between solidity and movement. The boulder anchors the foreground, but the eye keeps travelling past it towards the distant rise and its small, almost toy-like silhouette.
The contrast between the expansive, quiet landscape and the large, ornate title creates a meeting of registers. The lettering has the flourish of a formal dedication or an old-fashioned recital programme, while the photograph feels open-air and unceremonious, with mud, stones and tidewater plainly in view. The portrait and small radio mark introduce a more intimate, documentary note at the lower edge, like a label attached to a broad landscape. The overall mood is contemplative, though the warm copper sand prevents it from becoming austere; the image holds both a cool, misty distance and the tactile warmth of the shore under a clearing sky.
