Geraint Griffiths
Album artwork for Geraint Griffiths, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a close, high-contrast portrait with pale lettering against a nearly black background. A middle-aged man fills most of the left half and reaches towards the centre. His head is slightly tilted; long, tousled dark hair blends into the shadow behind him. Light falls strongly across the left side of his face, picking out a furrowed brow, deep-set eyes, a moustache and a full, pale beard. The right side of his face disappears into shadow. He wears a dark jacket over a light-coloured top, visible at the lower left and centre. The portrait is cropped close at the top and left edges and cuts off at the chest near the bottom.
The background is largely black, with a soft charcoal-grey area behind the lettering at the upper right. The portrait fades into this darkness rather than being separated by a border. Strong lighting creates a sharp division between the illuminated skin and clothing and the shadowed hair, face and background. The image is predominantly black, grey and off-white, with muted blue-green tones in the jacket and a faint cool cast to the shirt. The photographic image has a grainy, slightly softened appearance.
Several lines of pale grey-white text occupy the open space on the right. Near the top, “cadw’r ffydd” appears in a relatively large, slender serif style. Around the middle-right, the smaller uppercase word “GOREUON” sits above the larger name “geraint griffiths”; beneath it, in smaller type, is “cyfrol 2”. A compact list sits at the lower right, with “yn cynnwys:” above the entries “Y Cwm”, “Cowbois Cymrych”, “Diwrnod Arall”, “Baton Rouge” and “Un teulu”. The lettering is mostly serif, with restrained spacing and a soft, slightly blurred edge. The text is aligned in short, centred groups, leaving the portrait unobstructed.
What the image evokes.
The cover feels intimate but guarded. The face is close enough to make its expression the first thing noticed, yet the uneven lighting keeps it partly withheld: one eye and cheek are plainly visible, while the other side recedes into black. That split gives the portrait a tension between directness and reserve.
The open dark space and pale, measured lettering lend the design a quiet, reflective quality. The typography seems to float beside the head, more like a considered title page than a busy advertisement. At the same time, the rough hair, beard and grain in the photograph keep the image from feeling polished or remote. It could suggest an old monochrome portrait or a still from a spare, shadowy film, though the subdued cool colour in the clothing makes the scene feel contemporary as well. The result holds two moods at once: warmth in the exposed face and a cool, almost solitary darkness around it.
