Bant â'r Cart
Jac-y-Do
Album artwork for Jac-y-Do, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover with a softly mottled yellow-beige border around a rectangular colour photograph. The photograph shows six adult men gathered outdoors, arranged in two loose rows on what appears to be a grassy bank. Three stand or lean across the back, while three sit or crouch in front; their bodies overlap, and several faces turn towards the camera. They wear a mix of pale shirts, dark waistcoats or jackets, and trousers. The man at the far left is partly cut off by the photograph’s edge, and the seated figures’ legs and bodies fill much of the lower half. A dark tree trunk rises behind the group on the left; bare or sparsely leafed branches spread across the upper background, with sunlit green lawn and trees visible to the right. The photograph has a slightly soft, irregular dark edge against the surrounding border.
Large decorative lettering reading “Jac-y-Do” runs across the upper left and centre, overlapping the branches and sky. Its tall, slanted, serif capitals and lowercase letters are rendered in warm orange-red with a pale outline and dark shadow, giving them a dimensional, slightly embossed appearance. At the lower right, the much larger phrase “Bant â’r Cart” sits across the photograph and border in orange-red serif lettering with pale edging and shadow. A small italic white inscription, “Grŵp Gwerin Cymraeg”, appears at the lower left of the photograph, just above the bottom title. Along the bottom border, a line of smaller dark red italic text reads “Groupe de Folk Gallois • Walisische Folkgruppe • Welsh Folk Group”. The cover combines a posed outdoor photograph with prominent, layered title lettering and a textured-looking yellow surround.
What the image evokes.
The close gathering and the casually crossed limbs give the photograph the air of a group portrait made during a shared day outdoors. The men’s jackets and waistcoats lend it a dressed-up quality, while their relaxed poses, the uneven slope and the open greenery keep it from feeling formal. The branches lace the space above them like a loose canopy; the contrast between their dark lines and the brighter lawn makes the setting feel airy and slightly wintry.
The warm, weathered-looking border and the shadowed orange lettering suggest an older, tactile style of cover design, though the image itself is photographic and direct. The titles seem almost to sit on top of the photograph, like lettering on a printed programme or a sign, and their strong outlines make them feel distinct from the softer, more natural scene underneath. There is a pleasant tension between that theatrical, decorative title treatment and the unguarded human presence of the group. The result feels communal and rooted in an everyday landscape, with a touch of pageant in the lettering.
