A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square cover with a deep navy-blue field surrounding a central rectangular photograph. The photograph sits across the middle, leaving broad blue margins at the top and bottom and narrower margins at the sides. Its edges blend irregularly into the blue, particularly along the lower edge, rather than forming a sharp frame.

Two adults stand close together in the photograph, shown from about the waist or chest upwards against a rough, dark rocky hillside. On the left, a short-haired man in a pale blue and white patterned short-sleeved shirt rests one hand at his hip and raises his other arm diagonally towards the upper right. His open hand is visible above and behind the woman, with the rocky background showing through the gaps between his fingers. The woman stands to his right, slightly nearer the camera, wearing a light collared top with dark trim. Both face the camera. The photograph has uneven, shadowed lighting and a soft, grainy appearance; its earthy greens, browns and charcoal tones contrast with the blue cover and the figures’ lighter clothing.

The lettering is arranged above and below the photograph. At the top, ‘Dafydd a’ appears in small pale lettering, with the larger word ‘Lliwen’ beneath it in light blue. Both lines use loose, informal handwritten script and sit slightly right of centre. Below the photograph, the white handwritten words ‘Atgofion am y’ are centred above ‘RHONDDA’, which is much larger, set in widely spaced golden-orange capital letters with small serifs. The contrast between the casual script and the formal, substantial capitals gives the lower title area a clear two-level structure.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover has the directness of a personal keepsake: two people pause for the camera, framed by a landscape that remains visibly rough and unpolished. The raised arm could be a greeting, a gesture of emphasis, or simply a pose; its sharp angle lends a little animation to an otherwise settled portrait. Their proximity and shared gaze make the photograph feel companionable, while the open hand reaches beyond the pair towards the rock face and gives the composition an unexpected flourish.

The dark blue surround lends the image the feel of a printed album or family photograph mounted on a solid backing. The softer, irregular photograph edges keep that effect from becoming too formal. Beneath it, the orange capitals carry a weight that the handwritten lines above do not, like a place name set firmly on the page. Together, the script and broad lettering suggest both intimate recollection and attachment to a particular landscape. The rocks behind the figures are dark and dense, but the pale clothing, blue field and warm title keep the overall impression from feeling sombre.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
