Inside the image.
A square, loosely painted cover centres on a large, old-fashioned armchair, seen almost straight on. Its broad, high back and thick arms fill most of the image, with the seat extending to the lower edge. The chair is rendered in muted grey-green, olive and pale cream tones. Its back is deeply indented into irregular padded sections, with dark creases radiating from several small, pale button-like points. The upholstery looks scuffed and unevenly coloured, with sketchy dark outlines and pale highlights along the edges. A dark green seat cushion sits below, mottled with reddish marks; the front edge of the chair is cropped by the frame.
The left arm angles towards the lower-left corner, while the larger right arm projects into the lower-right foreground. Behind the chair is a patchwork of warm, vivid colour: red and pink dominate the right and upper-right background, with yellow, ochre and orange at the left. In the upper-left area, pale round forms and curved outlines overlap the warmer patches; they are suggestive of objects or shapes but are not clearly defined. Brushstrokes and loose contours remain visible throughout, giving the scene a rough, hand-painted appearance rather than a photographic one.
White lettering is placed over the right half of the chair back. The larger line reads “COGZ” in bold, narrow uppercase letters. Beneath it, a smaller line reads “ARFERIAD DRWG” in compact uppercase lettering. Both are aligned near the centre-right of the cover and stand out sharply against the darker upholstery.
What the image evokes.
The chair has the weight and familiarity of a piece of furniture that has been used for years: its sagging padding, worn arms and uneven surface suggest comfort, but also neglect. It seems to hold the centre of the image with a stubborn presence, while the unsettled patches of red, orange and pink behind it keep the room from feeling calm. The contrast makes the chair seem both like a refuge and like something left behind.
The painting’s imperfect contours and exposed brushwork give it an intimate, slightly raw quality, as though the scene has been remembered rather than carefully measured. The pale points in the buttoned back draw the eye into its folds, while the white lettering sits plainly over the upholstery, almost like a label attached to an object in a cluttered room. The image can suggest the melancholy of a familiar domestic space, though its lively colour and compressed, almost stage-like arrangement leave room for a more playful or theatrical reading too.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
