Anthem
Penrhyn Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Penrhyn Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover on a nearly black ground. The main image is a formal choir portrait arranged beneath a large pale stone arch. The arch fills most of the upper and middle area, curving around a central stained-glass window and framing the group below. Its layered mouldings, decorative bands and shadowed recesses give the architecture depth; the outer edges recede into darkness.
The choir stands in several compact rows across the lower middle, facing the viewer. Most appear to be older men in dark formal clothing, with pale shirts and a few white collars catching the light. Their heads and shoulders overlap closely, forming a broad horizontal line beneath the window. The front row is especially dark against the black lower background, while faces and hair are picked out by soft, uneven light. The image is photographic in appearance, with the architectural scene and group portrait sharing a subdued, slightly soft tonal treatment.
The tall stained-glass window sits on the central axis behind the choir. Its rounded top and narrow panels contain intricate, roughly symmetrical patterns in red, amber, blue, green and white, with circular and floral-like motifs. Dark columns or pilasters flank it. The surrounding arch is cream, grey and muted beige, with darker brown shading along its inner curves. This pale architecture and colourful glass contrast with the black margins and the choir's clothing.
Large, widely spaced pale serif capitals reading “COR Y PENRHYN” follow the curve of the arch near the top. At the bottom, the word “anthem” appears in oversized lowercase serif lettering, in a pale silver-grey tone with shaded edges that give the letters a dimensional appearance. Beneath it are two small centred lines: “CYFARWYDDWR CERDD / MUSICAL DIRECTOR” in gold-toned capitals, and “OWAIN ARWEL DAVIES” in smaller pale capitals. The typography brackets the photograph, leaving a dark band behind the title and credit text.
What the image evokes.
The composition has the bearing of a ceremony: the arch acts like a stage opening, the choir gathers in ordered ranks, and the coloured window glows behind them like a formal backdrop. The curved inscription follows the stonework so closely that the words seem to belong to the architecture, while the large title anchors the image below with the weight of a carved or cast sign.
There is a tension between the grandeur of the setting and the intimacy of the faces. The building feels monumental, but the closely packed singers make the scene communal and human. The darkness around the group adds a hint of theatrical drama; the window's jewel-like colours offer warmth and intricacy within an otherwise restrained palette. The result can suggest a civic or sacred interior without settling into either mood entirely: stately and devotional at first glance, yet direct and collective in the way the choir faces the viewer.
