Côr Meibion Llanelli
Album artwork for Côr Meibion Llanelli, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square photographic cover shows a broad beach beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky. The horizon sits just below the image’s midpoint. In the foreground, wet and dry sand extends from the bottom edge towards a thin band of pale surf; small dark flecks and irregular traces mark the sand, with a broken, light-coloured line of water or foam curving in from the lower right. Beyond the beach, a low green-brown headland runs in from the left and ends in several dark, jagged rocky outcrops near the centre. A narrow strip of calm sea separates the shore from the landforms.
The sky takes up most of the composition. Deep blue occupies the upper left and top, shifting to brighter blue around large white and grey clouds. The cloud bank is especially dense across the middle and right, with darker shaded areas beneath it; a small patch of warm light appears near the right side above the horizon. The beach is tan and brown, while the distant water and wet sand reflect muted blue-grey tones. There is no visible border.
White uppercase lettering reading “CÔR MEIBION LLANELLI” sits across the upper centre, just above the larger word “angel”. The latter is set in very large, thin, pale pink-lilac lowercase serif letters, spanning the upper-right area and overlapping the sky. A narrow pink-lilac vertical stroke rises beside the word’s final letter. The lettering is crisp against the clouds, while the landscape itself is rendered as a naturalistic photograph.
What the image evokes.
The lettering seems to float in the sky, giving the open landscape a second, more abstract horizon. Its delicate pink-lilac forms soften the weight of the storm-coloured clouds, while the small, tightly spaced white line above them feels measured and formal. The contrast between these two scales of type creates a quiet tension between the expansive and the intimate.
The beach has the stillness of a place between tides: the water is receding or gathering, though the image does not settle which. The dark rocks hold the horizon in place, and the clouds make the sky feel unusually close and changeable. This could be read as solitude or as spacious calm; the scattered breaks in the cloud and the glimpse of light near the horizon leave room for a more hopeful impression too. The image’s restrained composition, with its large sweep of sky above the low land, recalls the contemplative openness of landscape photography, while the oversized word turns that quiet view into something almost dreamlike.
