Alawon Y Mynydd / Mountain Melodies
Talgarth Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Talgarth Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover places a snow-covered mountain across most of the image, beneath a clear blue sky. Its broad, pale slopes rise behind a low line of dark trees and fencing, while a snow-dusted field fills the foreground. A large tree stands at the left; smaller trees and brush are scattered along the foot of the mountain. Several thin fence posts cross the field horizontally, with a darker, leaning post near the centre. Brown grasses and patches of exposed earth interrupt the snow along the bottom edge. The mountain’s ridges and gullies create alternating bands of white, grey and blue shadow, including a long, deep blue shadow descending diagonally near the centre-right. The sky is brightest towards the horizon and deepens to a more saturated blue at the top.
The landscape appears photographic, with natural variations in snow, rock, vegetation and light. The mountain occupies the middle and upper portions of the cover; the foreground field, fence and trees provide a smaller, darker band beneath it. The image has no visible border. Text is overlaid in the sky and upper part of the mountain. Near the top, small dark lettering reading “CÔR MEIBION” sits above the much larger word “Talgarth”, set in white serif letters with a subtle dark edge or shadow. “MALE CHOIR” appears below in smaller, widely spaced blue capitals. Lower down, “ALAWON Y MYNYDD” is printed in dark bold capitals, followed by “MOUNTAIN MELODIES” in smaller blue capitals. These lines are centred and layered over the pale sky and mountain slope.
What the image evokes.
The cover pairs an expansive, almost monumental mountain with a modest human scale: a fence, a few trees and rough winter grass mark the foreground, but offer little resistance to the great sweep of snow behind them. That contrast gives the view a sense of quiet endurance. The land feels open and exposed, yet the fence and scattered vegetation make it feel inhabited rather than remote.
The crisp blue sky and sharply drawn shadows lend the scene a clarity that can feel invigorating, while the wintry field keeps it sober and still. The mountain’s ridges resemble folds in heavy cloth, and its long blue shadow draws the eye down through the pale expanse. The prominent white title seems to hover in the sky; its formal lettering gives the natural view a ceremonial note, softened by the smaller, restrained lines beneath it. The result can suggest a traditional landscape image or a winter walk remembered in bright, clean light, without settling into either nostalgia or grandeur alone.
