A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A tall, portrait-format film poster is divided into three broad horizontal bands. The top and bottom bands have a pale off-white background with a mottled, lightly distressed surface; a wide colour photograph runs across the centre. The layout is strongly symmetrical and text-led, with oversized red lettering dominating the two pale areas and the photograph providing the main human focal point.

At the top, a small line of black text sits above four black stars. Beneath them is a centred French quotation in bold, condensed lettering, arranged over two lines. Below the quotation, the names “TAHAR RAHIM” and “LÉA SEYDOUX” appear in large black capitals at left and right. A small oval festival emblem occupies the space between the names. The word “GRAND” fills most of the remaining width in very large, tall red capitals, with narrow spacing and heavy block forms. The central photograph begins directly below it, with a sharp horizontal boundary.

In the photograph, a man and a woman lie close together in long green grass, their faces meeting in a kiss near the centre. The man fills much of the left side and is cropped by the left and lower edges; he has dark, curly hair and wears a white sleeveless top. The woman lies on the right, her head tilted back towards him, with light brown hair spread around her head and a pale top partly visible. Grass and thin blades frame them at the top and sides. The shallow, close framing gives the scene little visible depth beyond the surrounding vegetation. Natural greens and skin tones contrast with the white clothing and the sharp red-and-white poster design.

A second pale, textured band begins below the photograph. The word “CENTRAL” is set across it in enormous red capitals matching the lettering above, nearly spanning the poster’s width. Underneath, centred black text reads “UN FILM DE REBECCA ZLOTOWSKI”, followed by a line of three cast names in bold capitals. A very small block of credits runs below, with a row of assorted distributor, broadcaster and other logos along the bottom edge. The small print and several logos are too tiny to read confidently. The poster mixes a photographic central image with highly controlled, high-contrast typography and a lightly speckled, paper-like background.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The design has the blunt immediacy of a handbill enlarged to theatrical scale: two immense red words act almost like signboards, while the central image interrupts them with a moment of physical closeness. The lettering feels emphatic and public; the kiss is private, unguarded and softly lit. That contrast gives the poster a charged quality without settling into a single mood.

The pale ground, scattered marks and limited palette suggest something between a worn printed notice and a stark modern title card. Red against off-white recalls bold street graphics, while the crisp black names and stars add a hint of formal appraisal. Yet the photograph resists that graphic severity: loose hair, grass and skin introduce irregularity and warmth. The couple seem suspended in a small pocket of green, enclosed by the poster’s hard horizontal divisions.

There is also a tension between scale and intimacy. “GRAND” and “CENTRAL” are monumental, but the image is tightly cropped around two faces; the surrounding world is reduced to grass. The words can read as barriers or framing devices, separating the kiss into a strip, or as a visual rhythm that makes the moment feel insistent. The result is at once austere and sensual, public-facing and tender, with the roughened pale surface keeping the composition from feeling entirely slick.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
