Ysbryd Y Gael
Llangwm Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Llangwm Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a colour landscape photograph with large lettering and decorative bands along the top and bottom. A weathered, square stone tower dominates the left foreground. Its rough grey-brown masonry rises from a vivid green slope; the top is uneven and partly broken, and narrow dark openings punctuate its walls. Behind it, a strip of blue-grey water curves through a broad, low landscape. Green fields and scattered pale structures extend towards distant hills beneath a light, overcast-looking sky. The horizon runs across the middle of the cover, partly obscured by the tower and lettering.
The right half is mostly pale sky and open space. Large green lettering outlined in yellow reads “Ysbryd y Gael” in two staggered lines near the upper right. Beneath it, a much smaller word, “gæda”, sits above a rectangular portrait photograph bordered in yellow. The portrait shows a woman facing the viewer, with dark curly hair, a dark wide-brimmed hat, dangling earrings and a reddish-brown garment or collar. The crop ends around her shoulders. Below the portrait, white lettering on the dark green landscape reads “Mafri” and “Cân Innes” on separate lines.
The top and bottom edges are framed by black bands with repeating interlaced green ornament, reminiscent of looping knotwork. Gold-yellow lettering runs across each band: “Côr Meibion Llangwm”. The upper band sits directly above the landscape image; the lower band overlays its bottom edge. The overall design is a montage of photographic elements and stylised display text. The tower, fields and portrait have soft photographic detail, while the lettering and ornamental borders are sharply graphic. Green is the dominant colour, echoed in the title, borders and foreground; yellow-gold accents outline the lettering and portrait, while the tower's muted stone tones and the portrait's warm reds provide contrast.
What the image evokes.
The cover sets an old, sturdy structure against an open, cultivated landscape. The tower feels rooted and watchful, its chipped outline interrupting the gentler bands of water, fields and hills. The large title occupies the pale sky like a sign or banner, while the small portrait is presented almost as an inset keepsake. These different scales give the design a layered, assembled quality: place, lettering and face each claim their own space without quite merging.
The green-and-gold knotwork borders and embellished lettering may evoke a decorative, heritage-minded visual language, while the rural photograph suggests a quieter, everyday sense of place. There is a pleasing tension between the tower’s dark weight and the bright openness around the title. The portrait’s close crop brings a human presence to an otherwise spacious scene, though her direct gaze remains self-contained. Taken together, the cover can feel both ceremonial and intimate: the ornamental frame announces something collective, while the landscape and portrait invite a more personal, lingering look.
