A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square monochrome cover combines a large head-and-shoulders portrait with a prominent circular microphone assembly. A man in a dark suit and tie fills most of the right half, cropped at the chest and by the right and lower edges. His dark hair is neatly swept back; he faces slightly towards the left, with his mouth open and gaze angled upwards. Soft light falls across his face against a darker background, while the photograph fades into broad grey tones behind him.

In the left foreground, a large vintage-looking microphone sits inside a round metal frame. The circular rim occupies much of the lower-left quadrant, with thin rods and small fittings spanning its interior around a dark, bulbous central microphone. A narrow stand descends from it and disappears at the bottom edge. The microphone overlaps the portrait and the background, giving the composition a sense of depth. Behind both subjects, a pale curved band or arc sweeps across the left and upper areas; the rest of the backdrop is smooth and darkens towards the right. The image is tightly cropped, without a separate border.

Large white uppercase lettering across the top reads “DAVID LLOYD”. Beneath it at the upper left, smaller black uppercase text reads “Y LLAIS ARIAN”. The title is set over the light background, while the main name stretches across the top above the portrait. Near the lower right, three lines of smaller white text read “Y casgliad cyflawn ar 3 Cryno-Disg”, “The complete collection on 3 CDs” and “by the great Welsh Tenor”. The Welsh line is slightly heavier than the English lines. The overall treatment is photographic, in shades of black, white and grey, with strong tonal contrast between the face, suit, microphone and background.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover has the composed formality of a studio portrait, yet the oversized microphone gives it the presence of a performance caught just before or during a note. The open mouth and lifted gaze suggest a voice reaching beyond the frame; the microphone’s circular cage seems to hold that voice in a mechanical orbit. The two faces of the image—human and apparatus—are close enough to feel almost like a duet.

Its monochrome palette and measured typography evoke the visual language of older concert programmes and portrait records. There is a slight cinematic quality in the soft fall of light across the face and the darker field behind it, as if the singer has emerged from a dim stage or recording room. The pale arc behind the microphone also reads like a halo or a sound wave, though it may simply be a graphic curve. The result balances warmth and restraint: the portrait feels intimate, while the microphone’s intricate metalwork lends the image a cool, engineered precision.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
