John Ac Alun

Inside the image.
A square album cover shows two seated men playing acoustic guitars, photographed against a dark green, vertically ribbed backdrop. The men and their instruments fill most of the frame, with the guitars crossing the lower half and the musicians turned slightly towards one another.
On the left, a light-haired man in a pale blue or white long-sleeved shirt and dark trousers looks down at his guitar. His instrument is dark brown, with a glossy-looking body, a black sound hole and a long fretboard angled towards the centre. His left hand is on the neck and his right hand rests over the strings near the sound hole. On the right, a dark-haired man in a black top looks across at him while holding a yellow-toned guitar with dark edging. Its neck extends towards the lower-right corner; one hand is near the frets and the other is positioned over the strings. The men’s shoulders and guitars overlap visually around the centre, where the darker guitar necks meet.
The backdrop consists of narrow, evenly spaced vertical ridges, like folded or corrugated panels. Green light washes across it, brightening the ridges behind the men and leaving deeper shadows between them. The image has an overall green cast, especially over the background and the pale shirt. The lower part of the photograph falls into deep shadow, merging with a black area used for the lettering. The composition is tightly cropped: the men are visible from roughly the waist up, and the guitars are cut off at the left and right edges.
Text is layered across the lower portion. At lower left, pale blue uppercase lettering reads “Y GOREUON ETO”; beneath it, a smaller white line reads “36 O’R GOREUON AR DDWY CD”. A small yellow block below reads “The very best of” and “John & Alun on 2 CDs”. At lower right, the names “JOHN” and “ac ALUN” appear in very large, narrow, pale blue-white capitals, with “ac” in smaller lowercase letters. The lettering partly overlays the darkened photograph; the oversized names occupy much of the lower-right quadrant.
The cover is photographic, with strong coloured lighting and pronounced dark areas. Its main colours are saturated green, black, pale blue-white and the contrasting yellow of the right-hand guitar. The ribbed background supplies a regular linear pattern behind the softer forms of the people and instruments.
What the image evokes.
The image sets a close, informal musical exchange against a backdrop that feels almost theatrical. The green ridges make a simple seated performance look staged, as if the two guitarists have been placed before a lit curtain or a wall of narrow metal slats. Their inward-facing gazes and the crossing guitar necks create a quiet connection across the centre, while the large names at the bottom turn the photograph into a confident, graphic announcement.
There is a pleasing contrast between the instruments: one dark and visually weighty, the other bright yellow and immediately eye-catching. That difference gives the lower half a sense of balance without making it symmetrical. The left musician’s downward focus suggests concentration; the right musician’s glance across introduces a more conversational note. The green cast can feel vivid and slightly unreal, yet the relaxed postures and familiar acoustic guitars keep the scene grounded, like a candid moment that has been given a bold, coloured stage-light treatment.
