Tra Bo Dau
A Compilation Of Love Songs
Album artwork for A Compilation Of Love Songs, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover shows two oversized red-pink heart shapes lying against a distressed turquoise wooden surface. The larger heart fills much of the right half, rising from near the lower edge to the upper centre; its right lobe and point are cropped by the frame. A smaller heart sits in the lower left, with its point extending towards the bottom centre. Both have rounded, slightly irregular edges, glossy highlights and darker red shading along their lower edges, which gives them a raised, solid appearance. The hearts overlap the background but do not overlap one another.
The surface behind them consists of horizontal weathered boards. Pale aqua and turquoise paint is worn away in irregular streaks and patches, exposing dark brown wood and reddish marks beneath. The most prominent areas of exposed wood sit along the top and in narrow bands between and below the hearts. The distressed pattern remains visible across the full background, with no border or separate frame. The palette is dominated by cool sea-green and brown, contrasted with the saturated pink-red hearts and pale lettering. The lighting is brightest on the upper faces of the hearts, with deeper shadows around their edges and underneath.
Large uppercase text reading “TRA BO DAU” spans the top, centred above the hearts. The tall, narrow letters are pale pink-white with a darker offset shadow. Smaller white text is centred over the lower portion of the large heart in several lines: “Casgliad o ganeuon serch” above “A COMPILATION OF LOVE SONGS IN WELSH” and “FOR THAT SPECIAL PERSON IN YOUR LIFE”. The first line is in mixed case; the two English lines are uppercase and tightly set. The image has a photographic appearance, with pronounced surface wear in the wood and a smooth, reflective finish on the heart shapes.
What the image evokes.
The cover sets the familiar sign of affection against a surface marked by age and exposure. Its hearts are bright and polished, almost like painted wooden ornaments, while the boards behind them seem to have weathered through many layers of colour. That pairing gives the image a gentle tension: romance appears vivid and present, but it rests on something worn and timeworn.
The turquoise boards suggest a seaside cottage, an old garden gate or a painted boat left to the salt air. Against that cool, faded ground, the hearts feel deliberately theatrical, like keepsakes placed for a photograph. Their scale makes them less intimate than emblematic; they occupy the cover as bold shapes, while the small dedication-like wording draws the eye back to a personal address. The result is affectionate and slightly nostalgic, with a handmade, domestic warmth rather than a polished sense of luxury.
