The Silurian Sound
Rhymni Silurian Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Rhymni Silurian Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover combines a photograph of a Welsh valley with large, stylised forms laid over it. The lower half shows a green landscape beneath a pale, cloudy sky: a town spreads across the valley floor, with fields and low hills beyond. A long, segmented structure arches over the view. Its dark, narrow framework rises from the lower left, curves to a high point just right of centre, then descends towards the right edge. Grey circular or oval panels sit within the framework, like a row of discs; the structure is cropped at both sides. The arch divides the distant sky from much of the valley and is the main visual focus.
The photograph is tinted in cool blue-green tones. The upper sky is a deeper blue, fading into a brighter, milky blue near the horizon. A translucent pale-blue circular motif occupies much of the upper-left area and overlaps the sky and landscape. It contains a tall white ornamental design made from linked loops, flanked by two narrow red-and-yellow patterned bars. Faint oversized curved and angular shapes extend across the left side, giving the image a layered, graphic quality.
White lettering sits in the upper portion. Near the top, two lines read “Rhymney Silurian Male Choir” and “Côr Meibion Silwriaid Rhymni”; the first is in a larger, bold serif style, with the Welsh line below in smaller type. Beneath them, the title “The Silurian Sound” is set prominently in large black italic lettering, spanning the sky from the upper left towards the right. The text is integrated into the open sky above the arch. The image has no visible border. Its mix of landscape photography, translucent overlays, ornamental emblems and sharply defined geometric construction creates a composite appearance.
What the image evokes.
The arch reads at once as an engineered object and an improbable bridge drawn across the landscape. Its measured sequence of grey discs gives the sweeping curve a steady rhythm, while the valley below remains irregular: clustered buildings, patchwork greens and softly rolling hills. The eye moves between those two kinds of order, one assembled and geometric, the other expansive and lived-in.
The pale emblem and looping white ornament lend the sky a ceremonial, almost heraldic quality. Their cool translucence keeps them from feeling like a solid badge; they seem to float over the view, as if the cover were assembling a visual identity from landscape, pattern and lettering. The red and yellow side bars provide a small, vivid counterpoint to the otherwise subdued blues and greens.
There is a curious sense of scale in the composition. The arch appears monumental against the distant town, yet its clean outline and repeated panels also make it resemble a diagram or a model placed over a photograph. The result feels both rooted in a specific landscape and slightly dreamlike: a real valley viewed through a designed frame, with the title suspended in the open sky like a declaration. The restrained palette and formal lettering suggest composure, while the high arc and layered motifs keep the image from becoming static.
