Tarantella
3 Welsh Tenors
Album artwork for 3 Welsh Tenors, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square photographic cover shows three men in dark formal suits standing close together in a low-angle view. The central man is largest and placed slightly forward, his hands clasped at his waist and his face turned upwards towards the viewer’s left. The other two flank him: the man on the left stands a little behind, angled towards the centre, while the man on the right is set against the edge of the frame and faces forward. All three wear white shirts and dark ties; the central man’s tie is loosely knotted, and the outer two have pale pocket squares. Their expressions are serious. The crop cuts across their lower bodies, with the central figure’s clasped hands and the flanking men’s hands visible near the bottom.
Behind them, a dark bronze-brown sign or architectural panel fills much of the upper-left and centre background. Large raised lettering is partly visible across it, though the men obscure most of the characters. At upper right, this surface meets a pale beige stone wall made of large rectangular blocks. The upward viewpoint makes the architecture loom behind the group. Strong daylight catches the men’s faces and shirt fronts, while the suits remain nearly black with crisp highlights and deep folds. The image is dominated by black, charcoal, brown and stone beige, with small accents of white, blue, teal and yellow.
The lower portion is overlaid with fine, looping teal curves that cross behind and around the lettering. The title sits across the lower centre and right: “tenor” appears in large, thin, pale-gold serif letters, with a small raised “W” and the word “WELSH” set vertically in yellow beside it; a small “3” sits above the final letters. Beneath, “CYMRU” is printed in widely spaced pale-blue capitals. The word “tarantella” runs below in large, flowing white italic script. Along the bottom edge, a narrow line of turquoise capitals reads “RHYS MEIRION | ALED HALL | ALUN RHYS-JENKINS”. The lettering overlays the men’s lower suits and the decorative curves. The image has no separate border and uses a mix of straightforward photography and clean graphic typography.
What the image evokes.
The low viewpoint and close grouping give the three figures the formality of a civic portrait or a posed publicity photograph. Their dark suits and upward looks suggest composure and ceremony, yet the close crop and the slight differences in their poses keep the image from feeling entirely uniform. The central figure’s clasped hands make him the visual anchor, while the two men beside him create a broad, almost triangular arrangement.
The bronze sign and blockwork lend the setting a substantial, public character, like the exterior of a theatre, civic building or concert hall. The bright light on the faces feels open and direct; against the dark clothing and shadowed sign, it also creates a quiet sense of drama. The fine teal loops and ornate script soften that severity. They bring a more playful, decorative current through the lower part of the cover, while the vertical yellow lettering adds a sharp, almost architectural counterpoint. The result holds poised formality and a hint of movement together: the figures seem still, but the curves and the long, swaying title lettering make the composition feel as though it could turn into a dance.
