Showstoppers (The Welsh Gold Collection)
Côr Godre'r Aran
Album artwork for Côr Godre'r Aran, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover combines a title area across the top with a layered montage below. A tall, rounded gold panel stands at the left, overlapping the imagery behind it. To its right, the word “SHOWSTOPPERS” runs across the upper part in large, condensed blue capitals. Beneath the heading, two oversized theatrical masks dominate a dark, rounded rectangular panel: a smiling mask outlined in warm yellow and red at centre-left, and a pale blue and white mask with a downturned expression at centre-right. A broad group photograph of singers fills the lower part of this panel, with rows of small figures in dark clothing and a conspicuous band of red near the front. A narrow strip of another image is visible behind the montage at far left, showing purple and blue lights and indistinct forms.
The gold panel begins close to the top edge and extends almost to the bottom edge. Its softly rounded corners, shaded edges and mottled yellow-gold surface give it a raised, plaque-like appearance. Fine dark line drawings of leaves or decorative foliage occupy its middle. The surrounding background is mostly white, though the underlying images extend to the left and right edges. The main photograph-and-mask panel has rounded corners and sits slightly below the title, with the masks occupying much of its upper half and the choir-like group compressed into the space below. The masks are strongly lit against a nearly black background; a green patch appears near the upper right, and small red and blue lights are visible around the figures.
The gold panel carries several centred lines of text in dark brown or black, using a mixture of serif capitals and larger title lettering. The largest words are “Welsh Gold”; smaller text above reads “THE” and below it “COLLECTION”. Further down, the wording is arranged in short centred lines. The blue “SHOWSTOPPERS” heading is narrow and tall, with a slightly irregular, display-style outline. The design mixes photographic imagery with graphic mask illustrations and a decorative, dimensional-looking title panel. Strong contrasts between white space, blue lettering, gold, black, and the bright mask outlines give the cover a theatrical, poster-like arrangement.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the bustle of a theatre foyer compressed into a small, carefully stacked collage. The paired masks make an immediately legible emblem of performance, but their contrasting faces keep the mood unsettled: one seems to laugh or welcome, while the other appears sombre and withdrawn. Their exaggerated scale makes them feel less like props held by performers and more like glowing signs presiding over the rows of singers beneath them.
The gold plaque introduces a different register. Its decorative foliage and formal, centred lettering suggest a commemorative object, almost a keepsake or a label on an old presentation box. Against that stateliness, the tall blue heading feels brisk and public-facing, like lettering on a theatre bill. The result shifts between ceremony and spectacle: the quiet richness of gold on one side, the vivid lights and crowded company on the other. The narrow glimpse of purple-lit imagery at the edge hints at a larger scene just outside the frame, giving the montage a slightly exuberant, assembled quality.
