Er Hwylio'r Haul
Rhuthun & District Choir
Album artwork for Rhuthun & District Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a large, colourful painted scene on the left with a narrow column of lettering on the right, all set against a very dark blue-green background. The painted image fills most of the left two-thirds, from just below the top edge to close to the bottom. Its loose, swirling strokes depict a night-like landscape: a broad, twisted tree rises from the lower left, its dark trunk dividing into curving branches beneath a sky full of large yellow and pale green circular forms. A small pale building stands on a low rise near the right edge of the scene. Across the foreground, a dark blue path or strip of land curves towards the building, bordered and crossed by white, blue and yellow swirls that resemble turbulent water or windblown bands. Rounded hill-like forms and smaller circular shapes fill the middle distance.
The sky is layered with flowing strokes of slate blue, indigo, grey-green and white. Several bright yellow discs, some ringed or streaked with paler tones, appear among the branches; a particularly large one dominates the upper right of the painted panel. Smaller yellow circles recur lower down and near the horizon. The tree's dark olive and brown trunk contrasts with the luminous sky, while its branches curl horizontally across much of the scene. The building is a simple pale blue-grey block with a few dark window marks and a taller narrow section. The painting has no separate frame, though its straight rectangular edges meet the plain dark background sharply.
At the top, the title ‘Côr Rhuthun â’r Gylach’ is written in large, slanted yellow lettering with irregular, decorative forms and a dark shadow or outline. A thin cyan-blue line sits just beneath it, extending nearly the full width. To the right of the painting, small pale lettering near the top reads ‘GYDA’, followed by three performer credits in uppercase names and smaller role labels: ‘HUW LLYWELYN’ / ‘TENOR’, ‘MARI WYN WILLIAMS’ / ‘SOPRANO’, and ‘JOHN OGWEN’ / ‘LLEISYDD’. Lower in the right column, the title ‘Er Hwylio’r Haul’ appears in larger yellow lettering, with ‘gan’ in small pale type below it and ‘Robat Arwyn’ in larger pale lettering at the bottom. The typography is compact and vertically arranged, leaving dark space between the credits and the lower title.
What the image evokes.
The painted panel has the pull of a remembered dream: a landscape assembled from familiar things, but made unstable by the scale and repetition of its lights. The tree feels rooted and protective, yet its branches stretch across the sky like currents. The yellow discs might be moons, lanterns or flowers seen in a night garden; their ambiguity is part of the image’s charm. They brighten the scene without making it entirely cheerful, since the dense blue strokes and curling foreground retain a restless, almost stormy energy.
The sweeping bands at the bottom suggest both water and a road winding through hills. That uncertainty gives the scene a sense of passage, as if the viewer were looking towards the small building from somewhere just beyond the painted edge. The tiny architecture offers a point of stillness, but the surrounding landscape seems to flow around it. The contrast between this animated painting and the carefully stacked text column makes the cover feel like a meeting of lyrical fantasy and formal announcement. Its hand-drawn title adds to the impression of something personal and slightly folkloric, without resolving the scene into a single story.
