Penrhyn Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Penrhyn Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover with a nearly black, subtly mottled background. Large lettering and numerals fill almost the entire surface, arranged in stacked bands with little empty space around them. At the top, a narrow line of pale grey-white serif capitals reads “CÔR MEIBION Y PENRHYN”. Beneath it, the oversized numerals “1893” stretch across the width. Each numeral has a fine gold outline and a red-and-white striped fill; dark blue sections bearing small white stars appear within parts of the figures, making the numerals resemble a patchwork of flag motifs. The digits are tightly spaced and dominate the upper half.
A gold serif word, “DYCHWELYD”, sits across the middle between the two dates. Below it, “1993” is nearly as large as the first date, again outlined in gold. Its interiors combine pale white, red and green areas with black illustrated details. The first “1” contains a small green section with a black dragon-like figure; the “9”s and “3” include curved black lines and red, white and green shapes. The patterns are contained within the numeral shapes, so the date reads both as large lettering and as a collection of decorated forms.
Along the lower edge, a final line of pale grey-white serif capitals reads “PENRHYN MALE CHOIR”. The text is centred, with the top and bottom lines smaller than the dates but still prominent. The numerals and middle word have warm gold edging that stands out against the dark ground. The overall treatment is graphic and illustrative rather than photographic: crisp, flat colour fields and outlined forms sit against a faintly grainy background, with no visible scene or depth beyond the layering of text and ornament.
What the image evokes.
The cover turns dates into a kind of visual banner. Its numbers are not quiet markers of time: stripes, stars and interlocking colour fields make them feel assembled from emblems, as though the past and present have been pieced together for display. The gold edging gives the lettering a ceremonial weight, while the almost-black ground makes the bright colours seem to rise forward.
There is a pleasing tension between the orderly typography and the unruly detail inside the numerals. The dates are monumental and easy to read, but their interiors reward a closer look, with curves and small motifs pressing against the boundaries of each digit. The central word acts like a bridge between the two blocks, creating a compact, poster-like rhythm: title, interval, title, with the choir name anchoring the bottom. The result can suggest a commemorative badge or a decorated sign, vivid and formal at once, without settling into a single emblematic reading.
