A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

The square cover is filled edge to edge with a dense, layered image of stringed instruments. A large green instrument neck or body cuts diagonally from the lower centre towards the upper right, its dark fret-like divisions and pale markings visible against the surrounding forms. Behind it, a second instrument runs nearly vertically through the centre, with a row of dark marks along a pale, striped neck. At the left is a dark circular sound hole or opening inside a curved, blue-green instrument body; fine curved lines arc around it. Purple and blue instrument shapes, strings and narrow bands overlap across the background, with a reddish, ribbed form at the right. The close crop leaves little open space and makes the instruments feel interwoven, though their exact outlines are partly obscured by the layering.

The palette is saturated and high-contrast: deep black and indigo sit beside turquoise, violet, magenta and red, while the green diagonal form and a bright yellow title provide the clearest accents. The surface has a rough, mottled appearance, with grainy patches and abrupt changes in colour. The image reads as a painted or heavily stylised collage rather than a straightforward photograph; strings, frets and instrument-like contours remain visible beneath the dense colour treatment.

Across the upper centre and right, the word “Crasdant” appears in very large yellow serif lettering, set within a dark oval edged in yellow. Along the lower portion, two lines of smaller white serif text are angled upward towards the right: “Cerddoriaeth draddodiadol Gymreig” and, beneath it, “Welsh traditional music”. The lettering partly overlays the instruments, and the lower lines sit close to the edge of the cover.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The crowded arrangement suggests instruments heard together: lines, strings and necks cross like voices entering at once. The diagonal green form gives the eye a route through the tangle, while the upright striped neck and the circular opening at left anchor the image with recognisable musical shapes. Their overlaps create a sense of movement without settling into a single readable space.

The colours lend the scene an almost nocturnal intensity. Blue and violet feel cool and shadowed, but the magenta wash at the top and the acidic yellow title flare against them. The result sits between handmade exuberance and slight disorientation: a vivid, close-up field of musical detail that feels both tactile and dreamlike. The bold oval title has the look of a bright emblem laid over a more unruly image, while the slanted bilingual lines seem to follow the same rising motion as the instruments.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
