A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square, densely packed illustration in blue, white, black and yellow. At the centre is a large, roughly circular yellow form resembling an eye or medallion, marked with black dots, curved lines and small architectural-looking shapes. Around it, layered feathered and flowing forms radiate outward. A dark, shaggy shape with a single yellow-ringed eye sits above the central disc; further eye-like motifs appear among the surrounding feathers and folds. The imagery is crowded and partly symmetrical, but its irregular contours and overlapping details keep it from feeling strictly balanced.

Pale blue and white shapes fill the edges and background, with fine dark outlines suggesting feathers, curls, wings or plumes. Yellow and olive tones gather around the centre and fade into the cooler colours. The forms overlap across nearly the whole cover, leaving little open space; some are cut off by the square frame. The drawing has a hand-rendered appearance, with dense ink-like hatching, curved marks and finely worked patterns. The title sits over the upper portion of the illustration: “Côr Godre'r Garth” appears in small white lettering at upper left, “CORO” in blue capitals near the top centre, and the much larger black serif capitals “ANGELICUS” stretch across the upper right and centre.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The many eyes make the image feel watchful, as though attention is scattered through the feathers rather than belonging to one face. The central disc can suggest a pupil, a sun or a decorated seal, while the small black marks inside it hover between ornament and miniature signs. None of these readings settles the image into a single explanation.

Its pale, feathery forms evoke wings and celestial imagery, but their abundance and tangled movement give the scene a stranger edge. The dark eye above the centre feels almost animal, set within a mass of downy lines; the surrounding shapes could be protective plumage, a turbulent cloud or an elaborate costume. The careful black drawing gives the composition an old-fashioned, engraved quality, while the cool blue and buttery yellow colour fields make it feel vivid and dreamlike. The result holds delicacy and unease together: intricate and luminous at a glance, yet increasingly uncanny as the eyes and overlapping forms come into focus.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
