Clwt Y Ddawns
Band Y Gŵylwyr And Band Y Betws
Album artwork for Band Y Gŵylwyr And Band Y Betws, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover combines a large title over a warm, abstracted background with a narrow strip of four small photographs along the lower third. The background is made of overlapping, block-like forms in dark green, black, burnt orange, coral, pale pink and cream. Some resemble vertical windows or bars, particularly near the top and around the centre, while softer, hazy areas of colour spread behind them. A thin lime-green line runs horizontally near the top, crossing behind the title. The bottom fades towards a pale cream ground, leaving room for the photographic strip and smaller lettering.
The title, “clwt y ddawns”, dominates the upper half in large, slender white serif letters. It stretches almost the full width, with the initial letters in lower case and the words set on one line. Below it, centred and much smaller, are two lines of pale yellow-green capitals: “CASGLIAD O ALAWON” and “AR GYFER DAWNSIAU GWERIN CYMREIG”. Farther down, a two-line English subtitle in small white capitals reads “A COLLECTION OF TUNES” and “FOR WELSH FOLK DANCES”.
Four small rectangular photographs sit side by side in a row across the lower third, each framed by a fine dark border and topped by a coloured title band. They show groups of people in folk-style dress dancing or gathered outdoors; the scenes are too small to make out faces or finer details. Beneath the photographs, centred on the cream area, the first line reads “ODDI AR RECORDIADAU” in dark capitals. A red italic line below reads “TAKEN FROM THE RECORDINGS”, followed by a larger, dark serif line: “Clwt y Dawns 1-3 & Twmpath Dawns”.
The cover has a mixed graphic quality: the main field is an abstract arrangement of geometric shapes softened by blurred colour transitions, while the four lower images are photographic. The large, pale title is sharply legible against the darker, mottled upper background. The small photographs and compact text form a dense horizontal base beneath the spacious title area.
What the image evokes.
The design balances the measured clarity of the large serif title with a background that seems to waver between architecture and a wash of colour. The dark vertical blocks could suggest windows glimpsed at dusk, or a pattern seen through moving light; the coral and peach tones soften their rigidity and give the upper field a glow. The green rule cuts through this haze like a quiet horizon or a line drawn across a painted surface.
The photographs bring a more immediate, communal note. Their small scale makes them feel like fragments of a larger event, a sequence of fleeting glimpses beneath the expansive title. The contrast between these documentary-looking scenes and the abstract backdrop creates a gentle tension between the particular and the atmospheric: people gathered in specific places below, a more dreamlike field above. The restrained cream-and-green lettering and warm colours lend the whole cover an archival, handmade character without settling it into a single mood; it can feel both celebratory and slightly nostalgic.
