Its high, crowded deck and rigging rise against a white sky, while the hull stretches almost from edge to edge above curling blue-green water. The vessel is packed with small, brightly coloured panels, signs, windows, figures and decorative shapes. At the bottom centre, a large circular wheel-like motif overlaps the hull and water: red spokes radiate from a dark hub through alternating wedges of green, yellow, orange and blue. Turquoise and pale-blue waves curl around its lower edge and across the foreground. The ship’s hull is outlined in black and edged along the top with a row of coloured circles. Its central side is a broad black field covered with large, irregular Welsh lettering in vivid pink, yellow, green, blue and red. To the left are small rectangular compartments and sign-like panels, including a grid of yellow squares and a round-topped red-and-green section; above them sit further rows of tiny illustrated objects and labels. On the right, a tall green panel bears yellow curving marks, beside blue and green blocks and more small pictures. The lettering and compartments are integrated into the hull rather than set apart from the ship. Above the hull, masts, spars, ropes and fine black rigging criss-cross the open sky. Strings of triangular pennants in red, blue, green and yellow run between the masts. Several flags fly at different heights, including a striped flag at upper right and smaller patterned flags near the central masts. The deck is crowded with narrow structures, crates or cabin-like forms, and other tiny details. Small cloud shapes and bubbles float in the sky. Around the ship are scattered miniature motifs: a star near the lower-right edge, a little figure or sign at the right, and small sea creatures or objects in the water at lower left and right. Some of these details are too small to identify confidently. The palette is highly varied and saturated: the black hull and ink outlines set off vivid red, yellow, green, turquoise, blue and pink. The background remains largely white, giving the fine rigging room to show, while the lower edge is filled with layered blue-green waves. There is no realistic lighting or shading; forms are defined by strong outlines, flat colour and small patterned marks. The whole image has the crowded, playful quality of an illustrated puzzle, with detail extending close to every edge and little unoccupied space. The lettering is hand-drawn, uneven and emphatic, varying in size and colour. The largest line across the centre reads “CHWM·RHYD·Y·RHOSYN 2”; beneath it, smaller lines read “GYDA DAFYDD IWAN”, “AC EDWARD AWEN”, “ELLIW, LLION, TELOR” and “A RHUN”. Other tiny labels and speech-like writing appear on the hull and beside the ship, but are not all legible at this scale. ASSOCIATIONS AND AESTHETIC IMPRESSIONS The ship feels less like a vessel travelling through a specific sea than a floating noticeboard or travelling fair. Its black side has become a surface for signs, colour and lettering, while the rigging carries a web of pennants into the sky. The result is both recognisably nautical and cheerfully unruly, as though a whole miniature world has been fastened to the side of a boat. The great wheel at the bottom might suggest a ship’s wheel, a carnival wheel or a burst of stained glass. Its firm radial geometry gives the eye a point of order amid the hull’s crowded compartments and tangled ropes, but its bright wedges also keep the image in motion. The waves seem to lift and toss it, making the ship’s carefully inked lines feel momentarily buoyant and unstable. The combination of bold lettering, densely packed small pictures and flat, brilliant colour can call to mind hand-painted fairground signs, children’s book illustrations or an exuberant map whose labels have spilled into the landscape. There is an inviting sense of discovery: the eye moves from the big title to the flags, then down into the little windows and panels, continually finding another mark to decipher. Yet the dark hull and fine black rigging keep the composition anchored, so the abundance reads as deliberate and lively rather than weightless. READABLE LETTERING CHWM·RHYD·Y·RHOSYN 2 — Large multicoloured lettering across the centre of the ship’s hull GYDA DAFYDD IWAN — First smaller line beneath the large central lettering AC EDWARD AWEN — Second smaller line beneath the large central lettering ELLIW, LLION, TELOR — Third smaller line beneath the large central lettering A RHUN — Fourth smaller line beneath the large central lettering OBSERVATION NOTES - Numerous small labels, signs and speech-like marks are present, but most are too small to read confidently. - Several tiny figures and decorative objects around the ship cannot be identified with confidence.
