A grainy monochrome portrait occupies much of the left half: a person in profile or three-quarter view faces right, their head near the upper-left centre and their torso continuing down to the bottom edge. The face is strongly lit in pale cream against deep shadow, with the eyes, nose and lips picked out in a rough, high-contrast photographic texture. The figure appears to wear a patterned or textured garment, though its details merge into the distressed surface. The portrait is partly obscured by pale lines and marks. Across the image, cream-coloured diagrams and symbols sit over a dark brown ground. Large outlined circles near the top contain rough letter-like forms; another pair appears at the upper right. Beneath and between them are rectangular frames, horizontal and vertical strokes, angled marks, small clusters of dots and scattered handwritten-looking characters. A broad, roughly rectangular outline crosses the centre and lower half, passing in front of the portrait. The layering makes the figure and graphic marks difficult to separate, as though the image were assembled from a photograph and translucent notation. The background remains visible through the open spaces between these lines, with mottled grain and irregular patches throughout. Near the lower edge, a small cream inscription reads “cantorion cynwrig | 1968 - 81”. It runs horizontally across the lower centre and right, over the figure and central diagram. The letters are slender, lowercase and lightly serifed, with the date set to the right of a vertical divider. No outer border is visible. ASSOCIATIONS AND AESTHETIC IMPRESSIONS The cover has the feel of a face encountered through a working surface: the portrait is present, but plans, signs and fragments of notation keep interrupting the view. The diagrammatic lines might suggest a blackboard, a technical sketch or a field of coded observations, though none of the marks resolves into a single clear system. That uncertainty gives the image a quietly enigmatic quality. The earth-dark palette and distressed contrast lend it an aged, archival air. At the same time, the circles and squared-off frames make the composition feel deliberately constructed, almost like a collage of photographic evidence and abstract notation. The luminous face provides a human centre, while the overlay makes it seem partly absorbed into the surrounding marks. There is a tension between intimacy and distance: the portrait draws the eye close, but its rough surface and the signs crossing it keep the person elusive. READABLE LETTERING cantorion cynwrig | 1968 - 81 — Along the lower centre and right OBSERVATION NOTES - The small letter-like marks inside the circles and diagrams are not confidently readable. - The portrait's clothing and some facial details are obscured by the grainy texture and overlaid lines.
